The Cultural Heritage Archive is the main public archive in Romania dedicated to cultural heritage. It belongs to the Romanian State and it is hosted, managed and made public for researchers and the general public by the National Institute of Heritage.
The National Institute of Heritage [NIH] is the direct follower of the first public institution in the field of cultural heritage in Romania, the Commission of Historic Monuments, established by the 1892 law for the conservation and restoration of public monuments.
The Historic Archive contains: drawings, plans, blueprints, sketches, architectural descriptions, historical studies, surveys, conservation reports, technical expertise, lists of interventions and materials and inventory datasheets for buildings. Archaeology studies: reports from preventive and systematic research, aerial photographs from the 1970.
NIH monitors the UNESCO heritage in Romania and submits nomination proposals for properties to be considered for inclusion in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Both tentative list and nomination files are elaborated by the Institute. Therefore, the archive also contains monitoring reports and studies from research and restoration projects conducted on the monuments included on the lists.
Most of the documents are written in Romanian language, but the archive also contains many designs, plans, drawings and photographs.
