Description
1: Pre-Visit Preparation:
* Gather and organise relevant archival materials, datasets, and imaging resources related to the researcher’s focus area prior to their visit.
* Identify and provide access to any related materials from past research to ensure comprehensive context.
2: Research Context Assessment:
* Evaluate the researcher’s proposed topics and questions in relation to current and past work carried out by the National Gallery.
* Suggest additional areas of exploration or complementary resources that may enhance their study.
3: Sample Imaging and Analysis:
* Assess the feasibility of re-imaging samples, where appropriate and aligned with the research goals.
* Conducting new analysis is not a standard part of the method, but may occur in some instances if research topics relate to current research work.
* Provide guidance on available techniques and protocols, covered by the archive, to maximise the research potential of the visit.
4: Introduction and Training:
* Deliver an introductory session on the types of archival resources available, including metadata structures, imaging data, and scientific reports.
* Offer tailored training as needed to ensure the researcher is familiar with accessing and utilising these resources effectively.
5: Archive and Viewer Navigation:
* Conduct a walk-through of the related image viewer and digital archive interfaces, highlighting key tools and functionalities.
* Demonstrate how to locate, filter, and retrieve relevant materials within the archive.
6: Research Collaboration and Support:
* Facilitate discussions on research topics, encouraging collaboration and knowledge sharing to refine research approaches.
* Provide expert insights and support to help visiting researchers achieve the best outcomes from their access to the archives.
7: Ongoing Communication, Depending on the agreed level of collaboration:
* Establish clear lines of communication for follow-up questions or additional resource needs after the visit.
* Offer continued access to certain materials or expertise to support the progression of the researcher’s work.
